the way that pregnancy is treated as an inevitability is truly terrifying

listen I say this with patience bc some people may genuinely have not thought about this before but if you firmly say “AI art is terribly unethical and steals from artists” (which is correct) but then turn around and use voice AIs to generate songs/voice lines that sound like your favourite voice actors or singers……………………………………that is also AI art and it is also terribly unethical

can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike

i know since writers and actors are already striking thats gonna take up most of the news space on social media but like. ups has until july 31st to meet the teamster’s demands and if not then theyre going on the biggest strike against a single corporation since the early 1900s. the uaw (auto manufacturers union) contract is up this fall, and i believe the alu (amazon labor union) is as well. there’s a huge possibility that they might strike as well, depending on how long the ups strike lasts.

im seeing a lot of talk about hollywood going down but i want to see more talk about labor rights and working class solidarity across the board… like A Lot of shit is about to go down

we’re about to see a lot more propaganda by more than just hollywood, we’re about to see a lot of bullshit political moves on local, state, and federal levels. dont fall for it. workers have power.

    homunculus-argument:

Imagine an alien sharing a cool human fact they just learned like ”hey guys did you know that the silvery markings on humans actually aren’t true stripes? They’re called stretch marks, they happen when the human is growing fast enough to actually outgrow their skin, which is apparently something that just fucking happens to almost all of them at some point of their life.”

and another one is like ”wait so you’re saying humans don’t have stripes.”

”actually they do, but the stripes are invisible. There’s genetic code that’d give them stripes but they’re just the same colour as the rest of the skin. So the visible stripes are not real stripes and the real stripes are invisible.”

”I swear if you tell me one more weird human thing today I’m beating your ass.”

The human in the room looks up and goes “Wait I have stripes?”

“what do you mean cats can see them, but I can’t?”

what do you fucking mean cats can see them

    image

I WENT THROUGH THE SAME THOUGHT PROCESS

MY CAT THINKS I HAVE STRIPES?!?!?!?

NO NO ITS NOT “IT THINKS I HAVE THEM”

    BECAUSE WE DO APPARENTLY

SO ITS ACTUALLY A VERY DISTRESSED “MY CAT THINKS I KNOW I HAVE STRIPES?!?!?!”

AND I THINK THATS A BIT WORSE TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST

MY CAT KNEW I HAD STRIPES BEFORE I DID?!?!?!?!?!?

    I DIDNT THINK OF THAT

WELL I DID AND NOW I CANT UNTHINK IT

@beenovel @messiambrandybuck these are the variants

    image

    WHAT

apparently there’s a disease where they become visable, and these are the most common kind??

    image

Ngl it looks cool but???? I’m still in shock tbh

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT PATTERN OF STRIPES I HAVE AND THE CATS WON’T TELL ME

I COULD HAVE A CHECKERBOARD ON MY BACK AND NO ONE WOULD KNOW???

    image

    They’re called Blaschko’s lines!!!

The reverse can also be true … kinda.

I remember reading somehwre the human eye can see more shades of green than any other colour. I just googled it and the human eye can see 10 Million different shades of green.

So human could see stripes and patterns on, say, a reptillian race who maybe can’t see as many colours as we do, and think they’re just one boring shade of green.

Human: We have stripes?! I wish I could see them. I hope they look like yours.

Reptile Alien: Wait, I HAVE STRIPES!

    *mutual excitement all around*

CARTWHEELS IN. Humans do not have stripes, and this is a really fascinating case of misinfo! Basically, as far as I can tell, someone wrote a really misleading article about the lines of Blaschko and then a bunch of copy-cat articles and wildly misleading memes popped up. (IDK the original perpetrator, but here’s a Gizmodo article as old as 2012 erroneously calling them “stripes.”) If you google “human stripes,” you will find tons of quasi-scientific articles about them, where some parts are correct… and then people who clearly just read a click-bait title somewhere and did no further reading.

So what are the lines of Blaschko? Basically, while humans develop in utero, their cells move in specific patterns. The patterns your skin cells move in are called Blaschko’s lines or lines of Blaschko. On most people, these patterns aren’t evident. However, some rare medical conditions can manifest down Blaschko’s lines, which is why we noticed the lines in the first place.

To learn about why the lines become visible in some cases, let’s look he graphic with the different “types” of stripes, from this scientific paper (unfortunately behind a pay wall). It’s a review of Blashko lines and other forms of cutaneous mosaicism. Cutaneous means skin, and mosaicism is defined here as “composed of two or more genetically distinct cell populations.” They further subdivide mosaicism into genomic (something happens during development that causes different populations of cells have different genes) and functional (the genes themselves aren’t changed, but their expression is, such as an epigenetic change). For example, if very early on in development you gain a mutation for hyperpigmentation, then some of your skin cells might have the mutation and some won’t. As those cells divide and move to form you skin, they follow Baschko lines. Some of the lines will be different colors, because you have two different “populations” of cells. In the graphic, Type 1a and 1b are mosaic patterns along Blaschko lines. The other types are also caused by mosaicism, but depending on which cells are affected and what time in development they’re affected, they followed a different pattern.

I don’t know why cats would think we have stripes. I’ve seen the claim that a UV light might help visualize more subtle mosaicism, but not from any scientific or medical text (so likely untrue). You certainly won’t see Blaschko lines on yourself with a UV light unless you already happen to have some sort of mosaicism– this misinfo can easily be disproven by googling photos of humans under UV lights. But I guess someone thought this piece of misinfo meant that animals who can see into the ultraviolet spectrum must be able to see Blaschko lines and invented a new piece of misinfo. Funny how that works.

    Anyway tl;dr–

    • Lines of Blaschko are a developmental pattern, not stripes.
    • Lines of Blaschko are only visible if you have one of several rare genetic conditions.
    • Link between lines and UV light is unclear, but you definitely don’t have secret UV lines your cat can see.
